A semi-autobiographical fantasy monster thriller set against a backdrop of teenage strife, poverty, absent parents and the dream and aspiration to make video games. Written and illustrated under my nom de plume 'Jay Gunn.' Published March 2023 (224 pages).
Process: The process of creating the visuals of my graphic novel work is similar to the approach that I take as an Art Director/Concept Artist in my video game work. Creating geometry in Sketchup/Blender to sketch out environments that I then use as a basis for my charcoal textured drawings. All of the work here is applicable as concept art and visual world building.
Art Direction: The design aim for the setting of Coal Face was to take realistic urban and industrial settings and give them a fantastical thematic twist. An art style that appeals to teens and adults - gritty but stylised characters.
